The EU USB-C Regulation

From 2024 to 2026, the EU is implementing the USB-C regulation among smartphones, laptops, wireless headphones and other electronic devices gradually, in order to reduce electronic waste and improve charging compatibility. The transition to USB Type-C is no longer driven solely by market demand. It is now becoming a regulatory requirement for many consumer electronics. This regulation requires many portable electronic devices to adopt USB Type-C as the charging interface.

While consumers may mainly notice the convenience of using one charging cable across multiple devices, engineers face another challenge: protecting the multifunction interface. 

USB-C Brings New Protection Challenges

Compared with traditional USB-A connectors, USB Type-C contains more signal paths and supports higher electrical performance. A typical USB-C interface includes high-speed differential data lines, CC pins for USB Power Delivery communication, SBU channels for alternative modes, and a VBUS power line.
The same connector that supports fast charging and high-speed data transfer is also directly exposed to external electrical events. During cable insertion and removal, electrostatic discharge from users or surrounding equipment may enter through the connector pins and reach sensitive components such as USB controllers, processors and communication ICs.
For USB-C designs, Protection devices must balance two critical requirements: absorbing transient energy and maintaining signal quality. This is particularly important for USB 3.x and USB4 applications, where protection devices with excessive parasitic capacitance may affect high-speed signal transmission.

Low-Capacitance ESD Devices Are Widely Used in USB-C Interfaces

ESD protection diodes are commonly placed close to the USB-C connector to provide a short discharge path when an electrostatic event occurs. The protection device must respond quickly and introducing minimal impact on normal signal operation.
